I came up with a few concept drawings for the main antagonist within The Silmarillion’s Middle Earth: Melkor, later known as Morgoth, the Black Foe of the World.
I drew a few concepts of his early years as an angelic spirit of the Valar before he became consumed by evil. I wanted to contrast him at this point from the typical depictions of himself and Sauron as Dark Lords later on, while maintaining some visible sense of corruption within him. These sketches were inspired by both Tolkien’s character and biblical descriptions of Lucifer, whose history is echoed by Melkor’in countless ways.
I like the last drawing on the bottom right the most, his expression contains a sinister kind of pride, like Lucifer before the fall. Also, his lower body appears more spirit-like rather than fully humanoid. This pose shows him disrupting the music of the Ainur in the Ainulindale chapter of Tolkien’s book.
